CPD Water Vole Ecology: Conservation & Identification

Water voles are among Britain’s most cherished yet severely threatened native mammals, having declined by over 90% in a century. Their presence signals clean water and healthy wetlands, making their recovery vital for our freshwater ecosystems. This comprehensive eight-module online course delivers all you need to identify water voles, understand their ecology, and take practical action to protect and restore their populations. Suitable for volunteers, landowners, students and wildlife enthusiasts alike, the course assumes no prior knowledge and allows you to learn flexibly at your own pace.

You will learn to identify water voles by sight and field signs, and reliably distinguish them from rats and other similar species. We explore their behaviour, life cycle, habitat needs and ecological role, before examining the threats; including invasive mink, habitat loss and pollution, that have caused their decline, alongside the legal protections in place. You will master standard survey methods used by professionals, learn how to assess habitat suitability, design restoration projects, manage threats, and contribute data to national conservation efforts.

Completed over approximately fifteen to twenty hours, each module includes reading, knowledge checks and practical tasks to reinforce your skills. You will also receive a downloadable course pack with survey forms, assessment checklists, recommended plant species and useful contacts, plus a certificate of completion. By the end, you will be fully equipped to survey habitats, advise others, lead local action and contribute directly to water vole recovery in your area.
